Scented Memories…

 Scented Memories

Our bodies are truly amazing.

If you’re anything like me, you sometimes sit back and wonder at how
God knew to make everything just the way that it is?  Nothing short of a miracle for sure.

Sense of smell is one of the strongest ways to tie us back to memories.

So…while I was doing a little “research” for this post, I stumbled across this story about our sense of smell and our body.

Here’s a little science behind it

A few years ago, I was reading a blog post where the author said the best advice
she received for her wedding was to pick out a new perfume to wear on her wedding day, honeymoon,
anniversaries and special occasions.

Before our wedding, I tried many perfumes that I thought I might like to wear on our wedding day,
but none really hit the mark when I tried it.  While I was packing some boxes,
I found a perfume that I bought YEARS ago which was Gap Blue and that I had never even
taken it out of the box.  Do they even still make colognes/perfumes?!

Yes – I am THAT person that when I move, it is like Christmas, Birthdays, and every other holiday rolled all into one.
The perfume was perfect – just the right amount of everything that I was looking for.

Oddly…I do my best thinking when I’m in the shower for some reason, and the other day, I reached for a shampoo that I had not used since we returned from our honeymoon.
In that moment, I was instantly transported back to our honeymoon in the Florida Keys!
I was the crazy person that also decided to fly for the very first time (at 31 years mind you) for her honeymoon.    I had forgotten nearly EVERYTHING at home…which I’ll explain a little later, so once we got to Islamorada, we ran to the CVS down the street and stocked up on all of the stuff I had inadvertently forgotten!
I am pretty frugal, so I bought whatever was on sale, but couldn’t justify paying nearly $3 for a travel size shampoo that will maybe wash my thick hair 4 times…MAYBE.
I bought this shampoo and conditioner and LOVED it….I just neglected to use it when I got home…until recently!

I also purchased a travel-size lotion CVS band Aloe Vera lotion…and I purposely buy it now and use it occasionally just so I can be reminded of our amazing time in the Keys!

Something that some of you don’t really know about me is that I lost my Grandfather when I was 13 years old to lung cancer.  He was honestly my rock, my best friend, and the rock of our family.  I spend so much of my time around him growing up, and he always called me his “Moe”!

Here’s a few pictures I’d like to share of my Papaw!  I miss him so much – it’s hard to believe he’s been gone nearly 20 years of my life!

I promise – there’s a point!
He always used this hair tonic on his hair.  When I see it in a store, I will go in and smell it
and for some odd reason, it makes me feel comforted.  As small as that seems, it helps…especially on days where I’m missing him!
He also used English Leather Aftershave, so whenever I smell that, I am instantly reminded on him!

So, in the spirit of scents and perfumes – here’s a few of my favorites…some that are from the past, and some of my current favorites!

Who here used Tommy Girl when they were in middle school and high school?
I think this is the only perfume that I wore for some reason!

I also bathed myself in this lotion in high school!

Sun-Ripened Raspberry Lotion

Side note – did you all hear that Bath & Body Works is bringing back
some of the classic scents from the 90’s and early 2000’s?
Who here also feels old – I DO!

I got this perfume as a gift back when I was in college!  I love it so much!

Chance by Chanel

When I smell it, I am transported back to Daytona Beach
(where my Aunt & Uncle lived who purchased the perfume for me) for Spring break, and a trip later that August with my best friend Nicole!  It is definitely a favorite of mine, and I need to repurchase it again!

I also wore this perfume when I was in college a lot!
It’s a little strong for my “taste” now, but as we get older, our sense of smell changes I guess!

Lucky You by Lucky Brand

I used this perfume back when I was in high school and college, and stopped using it for a while…but I have started using it again and really love it!

Clinique Happy Perfume

I love Aqua di Gio for Men, so when I found this at Target for a super deal on clearance, I had to try it and I love it!  It’s a little strong so I barely spray any on and it lasts all day!

Aqua di Gioia by Giorgio Armani

My cousin Maria tipped me off to this perfume and I have loved it ever since!

Stella by Stella McCartney

And two perfumes on my list to buy are these two:

Tory Burch

Versace Bright Crystal

I got both the Tory Burch and Versace fragrance samples in a Sephora gift bag with an order I placed.  These two are super floral-y fragrances, and light and perfect for summer!  If there’s one thing that I am really loving is the availability of rollerball fragrances now!  You can get lots of fragrances without having to make a large commitment!
I have seen rollerballs in most places now…like Sephora, Nordstrom, Ulta, Belk, etc.

From now on when we plan on going anywhere special that we’ve never been before, I plan on picking out a new something – whether it’s shampoo, lotion, or even perfume so that every time that I
smell that specific scent, I will be taken back to a great time and memory.

Are you going somewhere special soon?  If so, take my advice – try this!  It will probably take a month or two for it to really “hit” you once you’re back, but I promise – it will!

For now, I’ll be sniffing my hair all night long, and dreaming of the beautiful Florida Keys!!

I love this post! You’re right; aromas are so powerful. I’ve been wearing Happy Heart for all of my adult life. My mom used it when my son was a tiny baby, so she would smell familiar to him. I love the idea about assigning a special scent to major life events and trips. Great idea, Melissa!
